Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”” Matthew 26:36, 39

Our Lord was strained in Gethsemane as he faced the cup of death. He labored in prayer while those close to Him were sleeping. Terrible was the task before Him yet He did not give up. His soul was prepared to please the Father.

The agony of this garden was the weight of our sins. In His humanity He  desired an alternative, nevertheless  He was ready to take the wrath of the Father for our sins. Instead of surrendering because of the flesh He surrendered to the will of the Father.

To come to a certain level we all must drink the cup of God's will. We pray not to force our will on God but to submit our wills to Him.
