“If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?” Mat 5:46-47
The human thing is always to think what’s in it for me. We tend to want to be good towards those who can return the favor. Today’s verses belong to the revolutionary teaching of Christ. He encourages the believer to not seek a return of favor in doing good but to do good because it is the right thing to do. We have a higher standard because though we are in the world we are not of the world.
Remember, “We must continue to do things that are good and we should not get tired. If we do not feel weak and stop doing good things, then we will receive a good harvest at the proper time. Because of all that, we must help everyone when we have the chance. Certainly we must do good things to help our friends who believe in Christ, as we do.” Galatians 6:9-10
