Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.” Psalms 32:5

When confronted by the prophet Nathan David confessed his sin. We can only hide our mistakes and transgressions from men and never from God. Our almighty God has extended His grace and forgiveness to us. Bringing sin before God and acknowledging it is the sure way to obtaining the forgiveness of God and removing the burden of guilt.

Unconfessed sin can lead to pain that wells up within our heart because we committed an offense. Just as we were forgiven at the point of our salvation by God we can count on Him to forgive us when we bring our transgressions before Him. Gordon MacDonald wrote: "We cannot expect to live healthily in the future when the baggage of the past keeps banging away at the trap door of our minds demanding attention." Confess and be freed.
