“There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.” Deut 15:11
The presence of the needy among the Israelites was an opportunity for them to be kindhearted to one another. He wanted those with the means to be openhanded and openhearted. Many times we hear that God is able to supply all your needs according to His riches. Has it ever occurred to you that you could be the conduit of that supply?
To Israel earlier on God had said “However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you,” Deut 15:4. God’s welfare solutions for Israel was not social services. They were to eradicate poverty by meting the needs of others.
“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” 1 John 3:17. Responding to the needs of others is a demonstration of God’s love. God has loved us so that he could love through us. God has blessed us so that he could bless through us.
Count your blessings. Consider everything that God has given you, material or spiritual. Most of us have far more than we usually acknowledge. Because we do not acknowledge, we are always pursuing more and we miss the opportunity to be grateful and generous.
Be grateful and be generous. Do not pray to God about situations he has put in your life to address. Some needs are not prayer needs they are practical needs. You don’t something about them.
